【いちりん挿し🌸あなたの好きな桜を探そう。】

春分の日は、天文学上では太陽が
真東から昇り真西に沈み、昼と夜
の長さがほぼ等しくなる日です。
本格的な春も春分の日を境にやっ
て来るとされていますが、今年は
どうしたことでしょう。雨が降っ
ても風が吹いても、冷たく寒い。

道端では雪柳の花が、明るい春の
日差しに眩しい白を照らし返すど
ころか、本当に枝に雪が積もって
いるのでは？と思わせるほどの陽
気が続いています。

お天気に焦らされながら、私も桜
の開花を待ち望んでいます。ここ
で言う桜とは、全国各地の開花予
想が出される「ソメイヨシノ（染
井吉野）」のことですが、桜はソ
メイヨシノだけではありません。

先週友人と観た桜もソメイヨシノ
ではありませんでした。おそらく
ケイオウザクラ（啓翁桜）ではな
いかな？と思われますが、ソメイ
ヨシノよりひと足先に咲く種類も、
あるいはソメイヨシノが終わった
後に咲き出す桜もあります。

八重桜は遅咲き桜の代表ですね。
八重桜といえばこれ、という濃い
紅色の花びらの重なりがとても美
しい桜に、カンザン（関山）があ
ります。
カンザンの花は、古くから「食べ
られる桜」として親しまれてきま
した。和菓子やアンパンにちょこ
んと乗っている、あの濃いピンク
色の塩漬けの桜です。

また、桜餅を包むために使われて
いる葉は、オオシマザクラ（大島
桜）です。柔らかくて大きい葉は
無毛で強香、私は幼いころはあの
独特の香りが強すぎて、桜餅から
剥がして食べていました。今では
あの葉があってこそ桜餅！と感じ
るので、必ず一緒にほおばってい
ますけど。
オオシマザクラの特徴は、開花と
ほぼ同時に葉を展開するところ。
新緑と白い花とのコントラストが
大変美しい桜です。

白い桜つながりでもう一つ挙げま
すね。ちょうどお彼岸の今の時期
に咲くヒガンザクラ（彼岸桜）で
す。淡い紅色のものもあれば、白
くてヤマザクラのような面持ちの
ものもあります。雰囲気は控えめ
で清楚なイメージ。私はこの桜も
大好きですが、枝垂れ系の桜も大
好き。

枝垂れ桜の中では国の天然記念物
に指定されている、福島県の推定
樹齢１０００年以上の三春滝桜
（みはるたきざくら）の大木が有
名です。岐阜県の根尾谷淡墨桜
（ねおだにうすずみざくら）は樹
齢１５００年以上、山梨県の山高
神代桜（やまたかじんだいざくら）
は樹齢２０００年以上と、ともに
日本の三大桜と謳われています。
これらの長寿桜たちは、エドヒガ
ンザクラという種類の桜で、ソメ
イヨシノの片親としても知られて
います。三春滝桜は、YouTubeで
開花の様子を発信しているそうな
ので、私も今年は覗いてみようか
なと思っています。

もう何年も前の春になりますが、
新宿御苑に行った時に、初めて見
た緑色の桜、ギョイコウ（御衣黄）
に感動したのを覚えています。名
前は貴人の衣の色目からきていま
す。花柄が長く、八重咲きですが
華美な感じではなく、なんとも奥
行きのある緑色の桜の花です。

私の実家の山小屋にも、可愛い桜
が咲きます。母はフジザクラと呼
んでいますが、別名マメザクラ
（豆桜）とも言います。こちらも
花柄が長く、下向きに咲きますが
特に可愛いのは花の大きさ。花径
はたったの１〜２センチほど。

ソメイヨシノはもちろん美しいで
すが、他の桜も魅力いっぱいです。
尾形さんもぜひ今年の春は
自分好みの桜を見つけてみてはい
かがでしょうか。

息子と一緒に映画を観ることが、私の楽しみになっています。大体は自宅でネットを検索して観ることが多いのですが、たまに映画館に足を運ぶとやっぱり臨場感があってワクワク度も倍増します。一緒に連れ立って映画館に行ってくれるうちに、たくさん観たいな〜。

As we approach the spring equinox, we might have expected the temperatures to moderate, but this year we are still experiencing cold days reminiscent of winter. Across Japan, people are eagerly awaiting the cherry blossoms, and the “sakura relay” is circulating on Instagram. Last week, I couldn’t resist posting photos of cherry blossoms that I had taken with my friends.

[Ichirin’s Note 🌸 Let’s Find Your Favorite Cherry Blossom]

The spring equinox marks the day when, astronomically, the sun rises due east and sets due west, with approximately equal length for day and night. Traditionally, the arrival of full spring is said to follow the spring equinox, but this year seems different. Despite rain and wind, it remains cold.

On the roadside, the blossoms of snow willows reflect a bright white under the spring sun. Rather than shining with the bright hues of spring, they almost appear as if snow is still piled on the branches.

Amidst the uncertainty of the weather, I am eagerly awaiting the cherry blossoms. When I mention cherry blossoms here, I am referring to the “Somei Yoshino” for which bloom forecasts are made nationwide, but cherry blossoms are not limited to just Somei Yoshino.

The cherry blossoms my friend and I saw last week were not Somei Yoshino. They were probably Keiozakura (Keiō cherry). Some varieties bloom just before Somei Yoshino, while others bloom after Somei Yoshino has finished.

The double-flowered cherry blossom is representative of late-blooming cherry blossoms. Among them, Kanzan is known for its dense deep pink petals. Kanzan blossoms have long been cherished as “edible cherry blossoms.” They are the intensely pink salt-pickled cherry blossoms that adorn traditional Japanese sweets and anpan bread.

Furthermore, the leaves used to wrap sakuramochi are from the Ooshimazakura (Oshima cherry). The soft, large, hairless leaves emit a strong fragrance. When I was younger, I found the scent overpowering, so I used to remove them before eating sakuramochi. Now, I feel that sakuramochi isn’t complete without those leaves, so I always enjoy them together.
A distinguishing feature of Ooshimazakura is that its leaves unfold almost simultaneously with its blossoms. The contrast between the new green leaves and the white flowers is incredibly beautiful.

I’ll mention one more type of white cherry blossom. The Higanzakura (Equinox cherry) blooms around the time of the equinox. Some are pale pink, while others have a white color reminiscent of mountain cherries. They give off a modest and elegant atmosphere. I love these cherry blossoms as well, but I also adore drooping varieties.

Among the drooping cherry blossoms, the Miharu Takizakura (Miharu waterfall cherry) in Fukushima Prefecture, estimated to be over 1000 years old and designated as a national natural monument, is famous. The Neodani Usumizakura (Neodani pale ink cherry) in Gifu Prefecture, estimated to be over 1500 years old, and the Yamataka Jindai Sakura in Yamanashi Prefecture, estimated to be over 2000 years old, are both hailed as three of Japan’s greatest cherry blossoms. These long-lived cherry blossoms belong to the species called Edohiganzakura and are known as one of the parents of Somei Yoshino. It seems that the Miharu Takizakura is being broadcasted on YouTube, so I’m thinking of taking a peek this year.

Although it’s been many years, I still remember being moved when I first saw the green cherry blossoms called Gyoikou (Imperial yellow) in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. The name comes from the color of noble clothing. The flowers have long stamens and double petals, but they don’t have a flashy appearance; they are simply deep green cherry blossoms.

There are also lovely cherry blossoms blooming around my family’s mountain cabin. My mother calls them Fujizakura, but they are also known as Mamezakura (Tiny cherry). They also have long stems and bloom downward, but what’s particularly cute about them is the size of the flowers. The diameter of the flowers is only about 1-2 centimeters.

While Somei Yoshino is undoubtedly beautiful, other cherry blossoms are equally charming. |FNAME|, why not try to find your favorite cherry blossom this spring?

[Editor’s Note] Watching movies with my son has become one of my pleasures. We often search the internet and watch at home, but going to the theater occasionally adds excitement and a sense of presence. As my son accompanies me more often, I find myself wanting to watch more and more movies together.
