【いちりん挿し🌸熊本の武士のたしなみ・肥後椿】
友人と連れ立って、東京文京区に
ある肥後細川庭園に行きました。
神田川沿いのソメイヨシノを堪能
しながら、趣のある和風庭園に足
を運びます。無料で解放されてい
る肥後細川庭園は、細川家下屋敷
の庭園の跡地をそのまま公園にし
たものです。
文京区は坂が多いことで有名です
が、肥後細川庭園は目白台と神田
川の地形を上手に利用した、高低
差のある庭園です。自然の湧き水
を利用した滝（小さいけれど、そ
こがまたいい！）もあり、大きく
成長した木々が斜面の上の方にあ
ると、まるで山の中にいるかのよ
うな感覚になります。
もちろん都会の真ん中なので、池
越しに仰ぐ空にはビルも見えるの
ですが。
こちらの庭園には池に被さるよう
に咲く桜もありますが（こちらは
今年は既に咲き終わりの雰囲気で
した、残念！）、何より目を引い
たのが、今日の主役「肥後椿（ヒ
ゴツバキ」です。
友人が紹介してくれたこの一本の
ツバキは、そこまで背が高くなく
綺麗に剪定されて、日当たりの良
い庭の一角にスッと立っていまし
た。
吸い込まれるような、大きな花。
その花弁の色は濃く、ツバキらし
い発色の混じり気のない紅色でし
た。
特に目が釘付けになったのが、シ
ベの部分です。花も大きくて存在
感があるのですが、シベの部分の
大きさが、いわゆるよく見かける
ヤブツバキの４、５倍はある超ビ
ッグサイズ！笑
こんなツバキ、見たことありませ
ん！
木の足元を見ると、木札にこんな
ことが書いてありました。
「肥後熊本藩細川家の武士のたし
なみとして品種改良を重ね、門外
不出として伝えられる花」
武士のたしなみって、どういうこ
とだろう？と思ったので、帰宅し
て調べてみました。
江戸時代、熊本藩６代藩主の細川
重賢が、家臣の精神修養のために
園芸を奨励した、と分かりました。
重賢が生まれる前になりますが、
江戸時代には、「寛永（1624−44）
の椿」と言われる椿ブームがあっ
たそうです。
精神修養かぁ・・・。確かに、花
や木を育てることは、一朝一夕で
できることではなく、手間も時間
もかかります。育てていく過程で
環境に目を向け、季節の変化に敏
感になり、何よりも人間の本能で
ある自分目線からの脱却（自分の
思い通りにはならないのであるか
らして、つまりは植物の在り方を
知り、そこから学ぶ）という点こ
そが、精神修養なのかもしれませ
んね。
さて、熊本では、江戸時代の天保
年間（1831−1845）に藩の庇護の
もと、藩士や豪農で組織された
「花連（はなれん）」という花を
観賞する会も誕生しています。
そして、椿、花菖蒲、菊、芍薬な
ど、花ごとに組織団体が作られて
いきました。
花連は西安戦争で解散になりまし
たが、その後昭和３３年に「肥後
椿協会」が設立され、現在も品種
改良や保全、育成を続けているそ
うです。
なんともまあ、熊本人の、ツバキ
への熱い愛情を感じるではありま
せんか。くまモンの赤いほっぺた
が、ツバキの花に見えてきました
よ。笑
最後にツバキの花言葉をお届けし
ます。
「変わらぬ誠（まこと）」
清華枯淡の味わいの中に日本人の
心を見る、武士の精神性を表す花
言葉ですね。

息子が男友達４人で東京ディズニーランドに遊びに行ってきました。雨の中早起きして・・・。予想通り空いていたようで、たくさんのアトラクションに乗って、大満喫。カチューシャをつけてはしゃぐ高校男子たち、まだまだ可愛いです笑。

Are you all enjoying cherry blossoms in various parts of Japan? At this time of year, Japan is filled with cherry blossom forecasts just like weather forecasts. Despite the hardships and difficulties we face daily, the cherry blossoms, blooming as if nothing has happened, appear divine, transcending everything.
While I went out to see cherry blossoms, this time, I’ll share about a memorable tree I saw, rather than cherry blossoms.
I went to the Higo Hosokawa Garden in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, with a friend. We enjoyed the Somei Yoshino along the Kanda River and then visited the quaint Japanese-style garden. Higo Hosokawa Garden, freely accessible, is a park built on the site of the Hosokawa family’s mansion.
Bunkyo Ward is known for its many slopes, and Higo Hosokawa Garden is a garden with elevation differences, skillfully utilizing the terrain between Mejirodai and the Kanda River. There’s a waterfall using natural spring water (though it’s small, it’s charming!), and when you see large trees growing on the slope, it feels like you’re in the mountains, despite being in the middle of the city. Of course, you can also see buildings against the sky over the pond.
There are cherry blossoms that bloom over the pond in this garden (unfortunately, they seemed to have finished blooming this year!), but what caught my eye the most was the star of today, the “Higo Camellia.”
This single camellia my friend introduced me to wasn’t very tall and was neatly pruned, standing gracefully in a sunny corner of the garden.
The large flowers were captivating, with rich, pure red petals typical of camellias. What particularly caught my attention was the stigma. While the flower itself was large and striking, the stigma was enormous, about four to five times the size of those of the common camellias we usually see! I’ve never seen camellias like this before!
When I looked at the base of the tree, I found a sign with the following written on it:
“Developed as a pastime for samurai of the Hosokawa clan in Kumamoto, this flower has been handed down as an extraordinary breed.”
I wondered what “pastime for samurai” meant, so I looked it up when I got home.
It turns out that during the Edo period, Hosokawa Shigetaka, the 6th lord of the Kumamoto domain, encouraged gardening for the spiritual development of his retainers. Although this was before Shigetaka’s time, there was a camellia boom called the “Kan’ei (1624-44) Camellia” during the Edo period.
Spiritual development… Indeed, gardening is not something that can be done overnight, and it requires both effort and time. Through the process of nurturing plants, one becomes attentive to the environment and sensitive to the changing seasons. Most importantly, it involves transcending the human instinct of seeing things from one’s own perspective (as things don’t always go as planned, it teaches one about the way of plants and learning from them). Perhaps that’s what spiritual development means.
In Kumamoto, during the Tenpo era of the Edo period (1831-1845), under the protection of the domain, a group called “Hanaren,” consisting of samurai and wealthy farmers, was formed to appreciate flowers. Subsequently, organizations were established for each flower, including camellias, iris, chrysanthemums, and peonies.
Although Hanaren disbanded during the Seinan War, in 1958, the “Higo Camellia Association” was established and continues to breed, conserve, and cultivate camellias.
You can really feel the passionate love for camellias from the people of Kumamoto, can’t you? It’s like Kumamon’s（Kumamon is a PR charactor of Kumamoto prefecrure) red cheeks resemble camellia flowers now. lol
Finally, I’ll deliver the flower language of camellias.
“Unchanging sincerity”
This flower language represents the samurai spirit seen in the subtlety of beauty and transience.
