【いちりん挿し🌸5月1日に幸せを運ぶ花・スズラン】
春の訪れを告げる花は数えきれな
いほどありますが、スズランもそ
の一つ。白いベル型の小花を下向
きに楚々と咲かせる姿は、とても
愛らしく、つい摘んで持ち帰りた
くなります。
幼い頃、庭に咲くスズランを見て
は、（妖精のようだな、、、）と思っ
ていました。葉のカーブといい、
色といい、花の形といい、咲き方
といい、私の好みそのものでした。
いつか花の間から本物の妖精が現
れるのではないか、と本気で思っ
ていたので、スズランを見る時は、
いつも一人で静かにしゃがんで、
なぜか息を殺しながら眺めていた
ものです。
そんな私の中の妖精ちゃんのイメ
ージを打ち崩してくれたのが、
「スズランは猛毒」という事実で
した。いつだったのかは覚えてい
ませんが、誰かにその事実を教え
られたのです。ショックでしたね
（笑）。
日本に生息するスズランは、日本
原産のものと、ヨーロッパ原産の
ものがあります。
ニホンスズランは、本州中部以北
の山あいに自生していて、花は葉
に隠れるようにひっそりと咲きま
す。鉢植えや路地植えでよく見か
ける、花が見えるタイプは、ヨー
ロッパ原産のドイツスズランです。
スズランの花言葉は、「幸福」。イ
ギリスやフランスでは、5月1日に
スズランを贈ると、もらった人に
幸福が訪れる、という言い伝えが
あり、今もスズランの花束を親し
い人や愛する人に贈る風習があり
ます。フランス語でスズランは、
「ミュゲ」と言いますが、5月1日
は「ミュゲの日」と呼ばれていま
す（ちょうど昨日でしたね！）き
っと、今年もミュゲの花束が多く
の人を笑顔にしたことでしょう。
フィンランドの国花でもあるスズ
ラン。ヨーロッパでは人に寄り添
うお花なのでしょうね。
一方で、有毒植物であることから、
アイヌではあまり親しまれなかっ
たそうです。アイヌ語では「チロ
ンヌプキナ（狐の草）」。ギョウジ
ャニンニクに葉がそっくりなので、
狐が化けたという意味でしょうか。
そんな文化はありますが、北海道
は長野県と並びスズランの産地と
して有名です。しかし、栽培にと
ても手間がかかるため、だんだん
と生産量が減ってきているようで
す。
英語名は、Lily of the valley （谷
間のユリ）。この英語名から分かる
ように、スズランはラン科ではなく
ユリ科の植物です。
白い花åが定番のスズランですが、
みなさんは、薄いピンク色の
ものがあるのをご存知ですか？私は
まだお目にかかったことはありませ
んが、見つけたらなんだかラッキー
な感じがするのは私だけでしょうか？笑
スズランの日にちなんで花屋の店頭
でどのくらいスズランが販売されて
いるのか興味があるので、今週は仕
事帰りに花屋巡りをしたいと思って
います。スズランの花束、想像した
だけでも爽やかでかわいらしいです
よね。
ただ、毒性が強いことをお忘れなく！
スズランをいけておいた水を間違っ
て飲んだりしたら大変なことになる
そうです。
私のように、人間用のコップをお花
にも使う人は、要注意。ペットや乳
幼児のいるご家庭も気をつけてくだ
さいね。
最後に、スズランのもう一つの魅力
をお伝えします。それは、香り！
香水にも使われるだけあって、スズ
ランの香りは爽やかで甘く、とても
みずみずしいんです。ちなみにドイ
ツスズランの方が国産のものより香
りが強いそうです。

でみてくださいね。

【Ichirin 🌸The flower that brings happiness on May 1st: Lily of the Valley】
Among the countless flowers heralding the arrival of spring, Lily of the Valley is one of them. The sight of its downward-facing, bell-shaped white flowers is so lovely that you can’t help but want to pick and take them home.
When I was young, I used to see Lily of the Valley blooming in the garden and think, “They look like fairies.” Everything about them, from the curve of the leaves to the color, shape, and the way they bloom, matched my preferences perfectly. I used to seriously believe that real fairies would appear from among the flowers someday, so whenever I saw Lily of the Valley, I would squat down quietly alone, holding my breath while gazing at them for some reason.
What shattered the image of the fairy in me was the fact that “Lily of the Valley is highly poisonous.” I don’t remember when I learned about it, but someone told me about it. It was quite a shock, haha.
There are Lily of the Valley native to Japan and those native to Europe.
The Japanese Lily of the Valley grows in the mountains from central Honshu northward and blooms quietly, hidden by its leaves. The type that can be seen in potted plants or planted along alleyways is the German Lily of the Valley native to Europe.
The flower language of Lily of the Valley is “happiness.” In England and France, there is a tradition that giving Lily of the Valley on May 1 brings happiness to the recipient, and even now, there is a custom of giving bouquets of Lily of the Valley to loved ones or dear friends. In French, Lily of the Valley is called “Muguet,” and May 1 is called “Muguet Day” (which was just yesterday!). Surely, bouquets of Lily of the Valley made many people smile this year as well. Lily of the Valley is also the national flower of Finland. It must be a flower that brings people together in Europe.
On the other hand, it was not very familiar among the Ainu people because of its toxicity. In Ainu language, it is called “Chironnupkina” (fox grass). Perhaps it means that foxes transformed into it because its leaves resemble those of gyojaninniku (ramps). There is such a culture, but Hokkaido is famous for Lily of the Valley, along with Nagano Prefecture. However, it seems that the production volume is gradually decreasing because it requires a lot of effort to cultivate.
The English name is Lily of the valley. As you can tell from this English name, Lily of the Valley is not a member of the orchid family but of the lily family.
Although white flowers are the standard for Lily of the Valley, did you know that there are light pink ones? I have yet to see them, but if I find them, I feel somehow lucky. Is it just me?
I’m interested in how many Lily of the Valley flowers are sold at flower shops on Lily of the Valley Day, so I’m planning to visit flower shops on my way home from work this week. Just imagining a bouquet of Lily of the Valley makes me feel fresh and cute.
However, don’t forget that it is highly toxic! It seems that it would be very troublesome if you accidentally drank water in which Lily of the Valley had been arranged. If you’re like me and use human cups for flowers, be careful. Also, households with pets or young children should be cautious.
Finally, let me tell you another charm of Lily of the Valley: its fragrance! Being used in perfumes, the fragrance of Lily of the Valley is refreshing, sweet, and very fresh. By the way, the German Lily of the Valley is said to have a stronger fragrance than the domestic one.
If you happen to see Lily of the Valley, try gently smelling the fragrance, too.
