花をこよなく愛する友人が、アメ
リカからやって来ました。ご主人
との結婚１０周年の記念旅行です。
行き先を日本に選んでくれたのを
嬉しく思い、二人をワクワクしな
がら待っていました。
友人たちが来日するにあたり、私
は毎日のように桜前線をチェック
していました。もはや日課。笑
ですが、今年は寒い日が長引いて
いて、ソメイヨシノの開花はまだ。
友人たちに会った時に、それでも
桜を見せたいと思い、文京区にあ
る椿山荘のお庭をご案内しました。
そこでは早咲きの桜が見られるか
らです。
椿山荘の美しい日本庭園を歩きな
がら、早咲きの桜を愛でていたら、
突然友人が「これ、可愛い！！」
と、あるお花に駆け寄りました。
それは、白色と薄紅色のアセビで
した。彼女にとっては初めて目に
する植物だそうで、たいそう喜ん
でいました。「なんて可愛いの！」
と彼女は目をキラキラさせて私を
振り返りました。「まるで着物を
着る時につける髪飾りみたい」と。
アセビの花は満開で、５、６ミリ
ほどの小さな花を枝いっぱいにつ
けていました。
アセビはツツジ科の常緑低木で、
日本に古くから自生する日本固有
の植物です。本州、四国および九
州に分布し、やや乾燥した林や山
の尾根などに群生することが多い
です。可愛い花の見た目とは裏腹
に、木全体に毒があり、他の動植
物を寄せ付けない性質があります。
アセビは漢字で「馬酔木」と書き
ますが、誤ってアセビを食べた馬
がその毒にやられてふらついたと
いう故事からこの漢字があてられ
たそうです。
万葉集にも登場するアセビは、
１０首も詠まれているそうです。
一つご紹介しましょう。
『池水に 影さへ見えて 咲きにほふ 馬酔木の花を 袖に扱入（こきい）れな』
大伴家持によって詠まれたこの歌
は、美しい馬酔木を手折り持ち帰
る様子を描いています。
あまりに可愛いアセビの花を見た
ら、つい持ち帰りたくなる気持ち
はよく分かります。ですが、忘れ
てはならないのが、アセビの毒。
アセビの葉を誤食すると嘔吐、下
痢、痙攣といった症状が起き、花
で作った蜂蜜で中毒を起こした例
もあるそうです。有毒物質は呼吸
中枢神経を麻痺させるアセボトキ
シン（アセボチン／アセボクエル
シトリン）は、アセビの葉だけで
なく花や枝にも含まれているので、
ペットや幼い子どもがいる家庭で
は扱いに充分注意をしないとなら
ないでしょう。
さて、アセビの花言葉をお伝えし
ます。それは、「献身」。もっと
調べてみると、「あなたと二人で
旅をしましょう」という花言葉も
出て来ました。なんと、私の友人
夫婦にぴったりの花言葉ではあり
ませんか。このメルマガを書き終
えたら、彼女にそれを伝えたいと
思います。

[Ichirin Insert 🌸 Flowers That Made American Friends Say “Kawaii!”]Our friends, who adore flowers, have come all the way from America. It’s their 10th wedding anniversary trip. I was thrilled when they chose Japan as their destination and eagerly awaited their arrival.
Leading up to our friends’ visit, I’ve been checking the cherry blossom front daily. It’s become a routine. However, this year, the cold days have lingered, and the Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms are yet to bloom. Despite this, I still wanted to show them cherry blossoms, so I guided them to the gardens of Tsubakiyama Villa in Bunkyo Ward. There, early-blooming cherry blossoms can be seen.
While strolling through the beautiful Japanese garden of Tsubakiyama Villa, admiring the early-blooming cherry blossoms, our friends suddenly exclaimed, “This is adorable!” and rushed over to a certain flower.
It was the Pieris japonica, with its white and pale pink flowers. It was the first time she had seen this plant, and she was overjoyed. “How cute!” she said, her eyes sparkling as she turned to me. “It’s like a hair ornament worn with a kimono,” she added.
The Pieris japonica flowers were in full bloom, covering the branches with small flowers measuring 5 to 6 millimeters in diameter.
Pieris japonica is an evergreen shrub of the heather family native to Japan. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, often found in slightly dry forests and mountain ridges. Despite its cute appearance, the entire plant is poisonous, containing toxins that repel other animals and plants. The name “Pieris japonica” is written in kanji as “馬酔木” (drunken horse tree), which comes from a story of a horse becoming intoxicated after mistakenly eating Pieris japonica leaves.
Pieris japonica is also mentioned in the Manyoshu, a collection of Japanese poetry from the Nara period, with 10 poems dedicated to it. Let me introduce one.
“In the pond water,
Even shadows are visible
As it blooms fragrantly—
Horse-intoxicating tree blossoms
Tucked into my sleeve.”
This poem by Ōtomo no Yakamochi depicts the act of plucking and bringing back beautiful Pieris japonica blossoms.
Seeing such adorable Pieris japonica flowers, it’s understandable to want to bring some home. However, we must not forget about its poison. Ingesting Pieris japonica leaves can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and convulsions. There have even been cases of poisoning from honey made from its flowers. The toxic substance, Pierisin (Pieris toxin), which paralyzes the respiratory center nerves, is present not only in Pieris japonica leaves but also in its flowers and branches. Therefore, households with pets or young children must handle it with caution.
Now, let me tell you the language of flowers for Pieris japonica. It is “devotion.” Upon further research, I found another meaning: “Let’s travel together.” Isn’t it the perfect language of flowers for my friends’ anniversary trip? I can’t wait to tell her this after finishing writing this newsletter.
[Editor’s Note] My American friend’s husband looked puzzled and asked, “Why do so many people wear masks?” I explained, “It’s partly for preventing colds, but especially during this season, the pollen is intense, particularly cedar pollen.” He seemed oddly satisfied with the answer.
