【ワシントンの桜の返礼に日本へ贈られた木とは？】コラム：いちりん挿し

職場の近くに素敵な家があります。
ペールグリーン色の屋根と白い壁
のその家は、林の中にひっそりと
建っているような雰囲気で、一体
どんな人が住んでいるのかしら、
と想像してみたくなるのでした。

林の家（と勝手に命名している笑）
には小さな庭があって、そこにシ
ンボルツリーがすっくと立ってい
ます。今まさに満開の、白いハナ
ミズキ。高さもゆうに５メートル
くらいはありそうな、とても立派
な木です。

それが家の外装とぴったりな雰囲
気で、絵になるなぁ、、、という
か、絵に描きたいなぁ、、、と、
今日も感嘆のため息混じりで通り
過ぎました。

ハナミズキの原産はアメリカ。英
語では、dogwood といいます。な
ぜ「犬の木」という名前がついて
いるのでしょう。一説には、17世
紀ごろにハナミズキの樹皮の煮
汁が犬の皮膚病治療薬として使用
されたため、とも言われています。

ハナミズキはアメリカ人が大好き
な木。日本の「桜前線」のように
「ハナミズキ前線」が報道される
ことがあるそうですよ。ハナミズ
キの色は、白または薄いピンク色。
アメリカの広い大地に一斉に咲く
姿を想像すると、さぞ圧巻だろう
と思います。

アメリカ人が愛してやまないハナ
ミズキ。初めて日本に植樹され
たのは、大正時代のこと。明治時
代末期の1912年に、当時の尾崎
行雄東京市長が桜の苗木6040本を
アメリカへ送りました。その返礼
として、3年後の1915年に、タフ
ト米大統領がハナミズキを日本に
寄贈したのです。

「ワシントンの桜」といえば有名
ですが、そのお返しにハナミズキ
が贈られて植えられたのが、日本
でのハナミズキ第一号だったと知
っている人はどれほどいるでしょ
う。（私も知りませんでした！）
しかも今では街路樹の定番になって
いるのに、まさかこんなに日本暦
の浅い樹木だとは思っていません
でした。

ちなみに、皆さん花だと思ってい
る部分は総苞です。実際の花は、
センターにちょこんと鎮座する、
５ミリ程の花の集合体です。

ハナミズキの寿命は80年ほど。
日本で一番古いハナミズキは、
東京都立園芸高校にある樹齢100
年以上の老木です。大正時代にア
メリカからプレゼントされた60本
のうち、残っているのはこの都立
高校の一本のみ。

そういえば、ハナミズキ、と聞く
と、一青窈さんの曲を思い出す人
も多いでしょう。「君と好きな人
が100年続きますように」とい
う、愛情に満ちた願いのようなフ
レーズは、ハナミズキにぴったり。
樹齢が80〜100年というのも、奇し
くも人のようですしね。

そんなハナミズキの花言葉は、
「永続性」。
病気になりにくく育てやすく、
成長も遅いので、シンボルツリー
としても、または枝を何本か束に
して、大切なひとにメッセージを
込めて贈るのにも適していそう！

最近、禁酒をしています。というのも、手痛い二日酔いを経験したからです。苦笑
お酒のない生活も、慣れてくるとそれはそれで良いこともたくさん。しばらくは自宅では（場所が限定的…笑）飲むのを控えます。笑

Near my workplace, there’s a lovely house. It has a pale green roof and white walls, giving it a quiet charm as if nestled in the woods. It makes me wonder who lives there.

I’ve unofficially named it the “Forest House” and it has a small garden with a striking symbol tree. It’s a majestic white dogwood tree, currently in full bloom, standing tall at least five meters high.
The tree perfectly matches the exterior of the house, making it picturesque. Passing by today, I couldn’t help but sigh in admiration.

Dogwoods are native to America and are loved by Americans. They even have a “Dogwood Front” similar to Japan’s “Cherry Blossom Front” in the news. Dogwood flowers come in white or pale pink, and imagining them blooming across America’s vast lands must be quite a sight.

Americans adore dogwoods. The first planting of dogwoods in Japan was in the Taisho era. In 1912, prior Tokyo Mayor Ozaki sent 6,040 cherry saplings to America. In return, President Taft sent dogwoods to Japan in 1915.

While “Washington’s Cherry Blossoms” are famous, how many people know that the first dogwood planted in Japan was in return for them? (I didn’t know!) It’s surprising that such a common street tree in Japan has a relatively short history here.

By the way, what many people think are flowers are actually bracts. The actual flowers are small and nestled in the center.

Dogwoods have a lifespan of about 80 years. The oldest dogwood tree in Japan, over 100 years old, stands at the Tokyo Metropolitan High School of Agriculture. Among the 60 dogwoods presented from America in the Taisho era, only one remains at this high school.

Speaking of dogwoods, many might recall the song by a popular singer Hitoto Yo. The phrase “May you and your loved one last for 100 years” fits dogwoods perfectly, as their lifespan of 80 to 100 years strangely resembles that of humans.

The flower language of dogwoods is “Permanence.” They are resistant to disease, easy to cultivate, and slow-growing, making them suitable as symbol trees or for bundling several branches to convey a message to a loved one.

[Editor’s Note] Lately, I’ve been abstaining from alcohol. That’s because I had a rough hangover experience. 😅 Living without alcohol has its perks once you get used to it. For a while, I’ll refrain from drinking at home (well, in certain places lol). Cheers! 🍻
