職場の入り口近くに、背の高い木があります。
緑の葉をつけた高木は周りにもたくさんあり、
取り立ててその背高のっぽの木を気に留めていなかったのですが、
つい最近、突然白い小花を咲かせはじめたら、圧巻！

優しい表情をした小さな花を下向き
に咲かせているその木は、エゴノキ。

遠くから見ると、５月の新緑の木々
の中に、一つだけ粉雪がかかってい
るかのよう。

近寄ってみると、枝垂れ桜やサラサ
ドウダンのような面持ち。垂れ下が
る細い房状の茎の先に、５枚の小さ
な花びらを咲かせているその様は、
さながら小さな群生流れ星。

このお花、可愛いと思いませんか？
私にはドストライクなエゴノキの花
姿ですが、なんせ、とにかく背が高
いので、もっと近寄って見たいのに
なかなか手が届きません（笑）。

そこで思いつき、職場の2階へ。
私の想像通り、白い流星たちは目の
前の窓いっぱいに優しい風景を描い
ていました。

その日は朝からちょっとしたアクシ
デント続きで（やることなすことう
まくいかない日ってありますよね苦
笑）、睡眠不足も相まって疲労感ば
かり募っていたのですが、面白いこ
とに、目の前に広がるエゴノキの宇
宙を見たら、なんだかどうでも良く
なり、ネガティブな気持ちも気づい
たらどこかへ飛んでいっていました。

植物が人にできることって、これよ
ね。
私はこの体験を多くの人に知っても
らいんだった。
初心に帰らせてくれたエゴノキに感
謝しつつ、その日は良い一日になり
ました。

さて、エゴノキに話を戻しますね。
エゴノキは日本全国で庭の植栽培材
として人気です。和名の由来は、果
実が有毒でえぐみがあることから付
いています。昔はこの果実を潰して
川などに流し、酔っぱらった魚を獲
る漁法があったそうです。ですが、
毒性は弱いので、本当に効果があっ
たか疑問視する見解もあるようです。

高さは７〜１０メートルにもなるの
ですが、成長は遅く、庭の木として
長く愛されてきました。花期は５〜
６月頃。以前は、花後の果実の若い
ものを採取して、洗剤として使われ
ていました。
子どもがエゴノキの花を「セッケン
花」「シャボン花」などと呼んで、花
をたくさん摘んで手で揉んで泡だて
て遊ぶ地域があるそうです。それ自
体には危険性はないのですが、口に
入れないよう、大人は注意をしてあ
げる必要がありますね。

エゴノキのイチオシポイントは散り
方です。桜のように花びらが一枚一
枚ハラハラと散るのではなく、花ご
とぽたんと落ちるので、散った星型
の小花が地面を覆うと、これまた美
しい宇宙が地上に展開します。

花言葉は、「壮大」。新しい挑戦や冒
険の始まりを祝うために贈られるこ
とが多い木だそうです。
新緑がエネルギッシュなこの季節。
皆さんもエゴノキにあやかって、
新しい冒険を始めてみてはい
かがでしょう。

Near the entrance of my workplace, there is a tall tree. There are many tall trees with green leaves around, and I didn’t particularly pay attention to this tall tree, but recently, it suddenly started to bloom with small white flowers, and it was magnificent!

This tree, which blooms with small, gentle downward-facing flowers, is a Styrax.
From a distance, amidst the green trees of May’s fresh greenery, it looks like there’s a sprinkle of powdered snow on one tree.
Up close, it resembles a weeping cherry or a Japanese redvein enkianthus. The small flowers bloom at the ends of slender, drooping stalks, looking like a cluster of tiny shooting stars.

Isn’t this flower adorable? I find the Styrax tree’s flowers absolutely charming, but since it’s so tall, I can’t get a closer look at them.
So, I thought of going to the second floor of my workplace. As I had imagined, the white stars painted a gentle scene right outside the window.

That day started with a series of small accidents (you know those days when nothing seems to go right), and combined with lack of sleep, I was feeling quite exhausted. But interestingly, when I saw the Styrax tree’s universe spread out before me, I felt like everything didn’t matter anymore, and my negative feelings just floated away.

This is what plants can do for people. I’ve wanted to share this experience with many. Grateful to the Styrax tree for bringing me back to my roots, I ended up having a good day.

Now, back to the Styrax tree. It’s popular as a garden tree throughout Japan. Its Japanese name comes from the fact that its fruit has a bitter taste and is slightly toxic. In the past, people used to crush the fruit and put it in rivers to catch intoxicated fish. However, the toxicity is weak, and some question if it really worked.

The Styrax tree can grow to 7-10 meters tall but grows slowly, making it a long-loved garden tree. It blooms around May to June. In the past, the young fruit was used as a detergent. In some regions, children called the Styrax flower “soap flower” and played by picking the flowers, rubbing them by hand to make bubbles. There’s no danger in this, but adults should make sure children don’t put it in their mouths.

One of the highlights of the Styrax tree is the way it sheds its flowers. Unlike cherry blossoms, which drop their petals one by one, the Styrax flowers fall whole, creating a beautiful cosmic display on the ground.

The flower language of the Styrax tree is “magnificence.” It’s often given to celebrate new challenges or adventures. In this energetic season of new greenery, why not take inspiration from the Styrax tree and start a new adventure yourself, |FNAME|?

[Editor’s Note] With the warmer and more humid season, G is making its appearance. I haven’t seen the adults yet, but the little ones are scurrying about. Since I live with a rabbit, I hesitate to use smoke or strong insecticides. How do you all deal with this? If anyone knows a good method, please let me know!
