【いちりん挿し🌸蝶が集まるルー（ヘンルーダ）は、魔除けの植物】
風の強い夕方でした。通りの向こ
う側に咲いている明るい黄色の小
花たちに引き寄せられるように、
道路を渡りました。その瞬間、向
かい風がザザっと吹き、風に乗せ
られて、甘いけどスパイシーな、
なんとも独特な感じの香りがふわ
っと薫りました。
（え？この小さい花の香りなの？）
私は思わず顔を近づけて嗅いでみ
ました。すると、今度はちょっと
ばかりのけぞってしまうような強
い香り。「良い香り」とはちょっ
と言いにくい、だけど臭くはない
し、、、。表現に困る個性的な香
り、と言っておきましょう。ます
ますこの花が何なのか気になり出
しました。
調べてみたら、ルーという名前の
ハーブだと判明。ヘンルーダとい
う別名も持っています。ルーは南
ヨーロッパ原産のミカン科の多年
草で、草丈は５０〜９０cmほど。
（そうか、ハーブなのね。どうり
でスパイシーな香りがするわけね。
だけど、それにしてもクセ強めよ
ね。）
更に詳しく調べていくと、魔除け
のハーブとして古代ローマ時代か
ら用いられてきたことが分かりま
した。カトリックのミサの前に、
ルーの枝を使って聖水をふりかけ
て、悪魔を祓う習慣があったそう
です。ルーが「神の恵みのハーブ」
と呼ばれるゆえんです。英語では
herb-of-grace という名前で呼ばれ
ています。
魔除けのハーブであるルーを自宅
に植えていると、悪いものを寄せ
付けない、と古くから信じられて
きましたが、薬草としても使われ
てきた歴史があります。疲れ目や
視力回復に効果があるとも言われ、
かのレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチも
ルーを煎じた薬を飲んでいたそう。
ただ、副作用などもあるし、葉や
茎を切った時に出る液を触るとか
ぶれやすいので、薬草としての効
果を試す場合には、よく利用法を
調べてから使ったほうが良さそう
です。
さらに！ルーは香水にもなってい
るそう！
私には微妙だけど、この匂いがた
まらない！という人もいるのでし
ょうね。ちなみに、猫はルーの香
りが苦手なので、猫よけ草として
も販売されています。
花よりも葉の趣（カーブが美しい
葉なんです）を楽しむのがルーの
醍醐味とのことですが、私はぜひ
皆さんにこの香りを嗅いでいただ
き、好きかどうかの感想をお聞き
することの方に、もっと興味があ
ります。笑
花が咲いているのは今の時期だけ
ですしね。
ちなみにミカン科の植物なので、
蝶はルーの葉が大好き！たくさん
のアゲハ蝶がルーの周りを飛んで
いる画を想像してみてください。
美しいでしょうね。
ルーの花言葉は、「悔恨」。
なぜそのような花言葉がついたの
でしょう？もしかしたら、視力が
命だった古代のアーティストたち
が副作用やかぶれを気にせず大量
に食べちゃったりして痛い目にあ
ったのかしらね。私の勝手な想像
ですけど。笑

気圧の変化、気温の変化に、なんだか体がついていけなかった先週。皆さんは体調を崩したりしていませんか？春らしいお天気ですが、それを楽しむにはまず楽しめるだけの健康状態じゃないとですね。皆さんもたくさん寝て、元気な毎日をお過ごしください！
It was a windy evening. I was drawn across the road to the bright yellow flowers blooming on the other side. At that moment, a gust of wind blew, carrying with it a sweet yet spicy, uniquely distinct fragrance.
(Huh? Is this scent coming from these tiny flowers?)
I couldn’t help but bring my face closer to sniff. This time, a somewhat strong scent made me recoil a bit. It’s hard to describe it as a “nice smell,” but it’s not unpleasant either… Let’s just say it’s a unique scent that’s hard to express. I became even more curious about what this flower was.
Upon investigation, I found out it’s an herb called Rue. It also goes by the name common rue. Rue is a perennial herb native to southern Europe, growing to about 50-90cm tall. (Oh, it’s an herb. That’s why it has a spicy scent. But still, it’s quite strong.)
Further research revealed that Rue has been used as an herb of exorcism since ancient Roman times. There was a custom of sprinkling holy water using Rue branches before Catholic Mass to ward off demons. This is why Rue is called the “herb of God’s grace.” In English, it’s called herb-of-grace.
It has long been believed that planting Rue, the herb of exorcism, at home would keep away evil spirits. It has also been used as a medicinal herb. It’s said to be effective for tired eyes and vision improvement, and even Leonardo da Vinci was known to drink Rue-infused medicine.
However, it has side effects, and the liquid that comes out when you cut the leaves or stems can cause blisters, so if you’re trying its medicinal effects, it’s best to research its usage thoroughly beforehand.
Furthermore! Rue is also used in perfumes! Some people may find this scent irresistible! By the way, cats dislike the smell of Rue, so it’s also sold as a cat repellent.
The charm of Rue lies not in its flowers but in its leaves (which have beautifully curved edges), but I’m more interested in hearing everyone’s impressions of whether they like this scent or not.lol After all, the flowers bloom only at this time of year.
By the way, since Rue belongs to the Rutaceae family, butterflies love its leaves! Imagine a scene with many swallowtail butterflies flying around Rue. It would be beautiful, wouldn’t it?
The flower language of Rue is “repentance.” I wonder why it got such a flower language? Maybe ancient artists, whose eyesight was crucial, ate a lot of it despite its side effects and blisters, and regretted it later. That’s just my speculation.lol
