【いちりん挿し🌸ハナハマサジって、な〜んだ？】
先週のいけばな教室で、いつも使っている花材にふと目をやると、小さな１ミリくらいの花を咲かせていました。生徒さんが、「え！この部分が花なんですか？初めて見ました！」と驚いていたので、詳しくその花を調べてみることにしました。
その花とは、スターチスです。い
けばなのお稽古では、あしらいに
よく使われる植物でが、リースや
アレンジメントでも、彩りのアク
セントやボリュームを出す時に重
宝します。また、乾燥しても色が
綺麗に残るので、ドライフラワー
としても好まれるお花です。
上の写真は、赤紫色の発色が綺麗
なスターチスです。白い小さな粒
に見えるのが花で、赤紫色の部分
がガクにあたります。白い花は先
週の入荷の時には咲いていません
でしたが、日が経つうちに少しず
つ開花してきています。
スターチスという名前は、広く知
られていますが、植物学上の呼称
が変更になったので、リモニウム
（リモニューム）と呼ばれること
が増えてきているそうです。私は
ハイブリッドスターチス（HBス
ターチス）という、花穂の細かい
タイプのもの＝リモニウムだと勝
手に思っていたので、リモニウム
がスターチス全般の呼び名である
ことを知り、認識を改めたところ
です。ちなみに、下の写真はハイ
ブリッドスターチスです。見た目
も通常のリモニウムと違って、ふ
んわりと柔らかな面持ちです。
さて、前置きが長くなりましたが
リモニウム、って和名があるんで
すね。「ハナハマサジ」と言いま
す。漢字で書くと、「花浜匙」。
「浜」という字が物語るように、
原産は、スペイン〜北アフリカの
地中海沿岸で、海岸の砂地に自生
する野草です。花に見えるガクは
筒状なのですが、よくみると筒を
斜めにカットしたような形状をし
ています。そこから「匙」という
字が当てられたのでしょうね。い
つも見ている花ですが、こうして
細部までじっくり見ることはして
いなかったなぁ、と改めて思いま
した。
ガクはピンク、白、黄色、赤紫、
紫のほか、トーンを落とした渋め
なオレンジ色やモーブ色、桜のよ
うな薄い桃色など、たくさんの種
類があり、リモニウムはもはや脇
役ではなくてそれだけを束ねたら
とっても素敵なブーケになると思
います。ドライフラワーにしても
色がそれほど褪せずに長持ちする
ので、生花を買って自宅で逆さま
に吊るしてドライフラワーを作っ
てみるのもおすすめです。
花言葉は、「変わらぬ心」。
長持ちする色から来ているのでし
ょうね。
長く持つガクとは違い、白い小花
はあっという間に落ちてしまいま
す。そんな儚さを持ち合わせてい
るリモニウムの個性が、私は大好
きです。

During last week’s ikebana class, I happened to notice tiny flowers, about 1 millimeter in size, blooming among the materials we usually use. One of my students exclaimed, “What! Are these tiny parts actually flowers? I’ve never noticed them before!” Intrigued by this, I decided to investigate these flowers further.
[Ichirin’s Insert 🌸 What’s up with Statice?]Those flowers are Statice. They are commonly used in ikebana arrangements and are also valued in wreaths and arrangements for adding color accents and volume. Moreover, they are favored as dried flowers because their colors remain vibrant even when dried.
In the photo above, you can see the beautiful red-purple hues of Statice. The small white beads-like parts are the flowers, while the red-purple parts are the calyxes. The white flowers had not bloomed when I bought them last week, but they have gradually started to bloom as days pass.
Although the name “Statice” is widely known, its botanical name has changed, and it’s becoming increasingly common to call it Limonium. I used to think that Hybrid Statice (HB Statice), which has delicate flower spikes, was Limonium, but upon learning that Limonium is the general term for Statice, I revised my understanding. By the way, the photo below shows Hybrid Statice. Unlike the typical Limonium, it has a soft and gentle appearance.
Now, to get to the point, there is a Japanese name for Limonium, which is “Hanahamasaji.” Written in kanji, it is “花浜匙”. As the character “浜” suggests, it is a wildflower native to coastal sandy areas along the Mediterranean coast of Spain to North Africa. The calyx, which resembles a flower, is tubular, but upon closer inspection, it has a shape resembling a diagonally cut tube. Perhaps this is why the character “匙” (spoon) was assigned to it. Although I always see these flowers, I realized that I had never taken a close look at them until now.
The calyxes come in various colors such as pink, white, yellow, red-purple, and purple, as well as muted tones like deep orange and mauve, and light peach tones like cherry blossoms. Limonium is no longer just a supporting role; I believe it would make a wonderful bouquet if bundled together. Since Limonium retains its color well even as a dried flower, I recommend buying fresh flowers and making dried flowers by hanging them upside down at home.
The language of flowers for Limonium is “unchanging heart.” This may come from its long-lasting colors. Unlike the calyxes, the small white flowers fall off quickly. I love the ephemeral nature of Limonium, which contrasts with the long-lasting calyxes.
