ハクモクレンです。
この時期、春を告げる花を咲かせ
る木々をよく目にします。
ハクモクレンのように、葉を出す
前に花を咲かせる木は、冬の裸の
枝に急に生命を宿したような印象
を私たちに見せてくれます。春の
目覚めそのものですね。
ハクモクレンは、モクレン科モク
レン属の落葉広葉樹です。モクレ
ンといえば、白いハクモクレン
（白木蓮）もあれば、紫色のシモ
クレン（紫木蓮）もあります。ど
ちらも中国原産で、日本には古く
に渡来しました。色の違いは一目
瞭然ですが、背の高さも大きく違
います。樹高４〜５mほどのシモ
クレンに対し、ハクモクレンは
２０mにも成長する高木です。
ハクモクレンは世界最古級の花木
と言われており、一億年以上前の
地層から化石が発見されているそ
うです。一億年以上も前とは！！
人類は足元にも及ばないなぁ、と
思います。
ところで、みなさんは、
ハクモクレンによく似たコブシと
いう木があるのをご存知でしょう
か。開花時期も今頃から始まり、
木の高さも蕾のつき方も、花の雰
囲気も似ています。
コブシもハクモクレンと同じく、
モクレン科モクレン属の落葉広葉
樹。どちらも白い花びらですが、
コブシの花びらが６枚なのに対し
ハクモクレンは９枚。

実は、どちらも実際の花びらは６
枚なのですが、花びらの下につい
ている３枚のがく片が、コブシの
場合は緑色なのに対し、ハクモク
レンのがく片は白色なので、花び
らが９枚あるように見えるのです。
また、花の大きさも咲き方も若干
違います。コブシの花の大きさは
４〜５cmで、開花すると花びらは
開き切ります。一方ハクモクレン
の花の大きさは８〜１０cm。コブ
シに比べて一回り大きいですね。
そして、開花しても花びらはコブ
シのように完全に開くことはあり
ません。「木蓮」という名前がつ
いたのは、蓮の花に似ているから
で、上向きにカップ状に開花する
姿がモクレンの特徴なのです。
みなさんも、お散歩をしな
がら、白い花をつけた高木を見つ
けたら、それがハクモクレンなの
かコブシなのか、ぜひ見極めてみ
てください。
さて、ハクモクレンの花言葉です。
たくさんの花言葉を持つハクモク
レンですが、その中から私が選ん
だのは、「気高さ」です。
この花言葉は、モクレン属の中で
もハクモクレンだけにつけられた
特有の花言葉とされています。こ
れは、ハクモクレンを中国から導
入したイギリスの王宮植物園園長
であるジョセフ・バンクス卿が、
「枝先にユリの花がついている木」
と評したことに由来しています。
白ユリの花言葉が「荘厳」「高貴」
ですから、なるほど納得です。

冒頭にも書きましたが、スギ花粉が辛い今日この頃。出産して以来アレルギーは息子たちにおおよそ引き継がれたか（息子たちよ、ごめん）と思っていたのですが、今年の花粉は久々にしんどいです。マスク嫌いの私ですが、とうとうマスクなしでは外を闊歩できない状態になりました。あ〜、春は好きなのに、花粉がいと憎し（スギに罪はないのですが）。笑

Flowers are steadily preparing for spring. Today, the spotlight is on the early spring blossoms, shining against the clear blue sky.
I received a photo from my sister of a large white flower bud against the backdrop of the blue sky. It’s a magnolia.
At this time of year, we often see trees blooming as if heralding the arrival of spring. Trees like magnolias, which bloom before leafing out, give us the impression of suddenly breathing life into the bare branches of winter. It’s the very essence of spring awakening.
Magnolias belong to the Magnolia genus of the Magnoliaceae family and are deciduous broad-leaved trees. Within the magnolia family, there are white magnolias and purple magnolias. Both are native to China and have been introduced to Japan since ancient times, where they grow naturally. The difference in color is obvious at a glance, but there is also a significant difference in height. While the purple magnolia grows to about 4-5 meters tall, the white magnolia can grow up to 20 meters tall.
Magnolias are said to be among the oldest flowering plants in the world, with fossils dating back over 100 million years. Over 100 million years ago! It’s humbling to think that humanity pales in comparison to such ancient existence.
By the way, do you know about the Kobushi tree, which closely resembles the magnolia? It starts blooming around this time too, and its height, bud formation, and flower atmosphere are similar.
Like the magnolia, the Kobushi tree also belongs to the Magnolia genus of the Magnoliaceae family. Both have white petals, but while the Kobushi has six petals, the magnolia has nine.

In reality, both flowers have six petals, but in the case of the Kobushi, the three sepals beneath the petals are green, while in the case of the magnolia, they are white, making it appear as if there are nine petals.
Furthermore, there are slight differences in the size and blooming of the flowers. The Kobushi flower measures 4-5cm in size, and when it blooms, the petals fully open. On the other hand, the magnolia flower measures 8-10cm in size. It’s noticeably larger than the Kobushi. Also, even when in full bloom, the petals of the magnolia do not fully open like those of the Kobushi. The name “Magnolia” comes from its resemblance to lotus flowers, as its characteristic is to bloom in a cup-shaped manner facing upwards.
As you take your walks, if you come across tall trees with white flowers, I encourage you to try to distinguish whether they are magnolias or Kobushi trees.
Now, let’s talk about the language of magnolia flowers. While magnolias have many meanings, the one I’ve chosen is “nobility.”
This language of flowers is unique to the white magnolia within the magnolia genus. It originates from Sir Joseph Banks, the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in England, who described it as a “tree with lily-like flowers at the branch tips.” Since the language of white lilies is “solemn” and “noble,” it’s quite understandable.
