【いちりん挿し🌸春を告げるミツマタ】
お教室の近所に、沈丁花の花が咲いています。
沈丁花の花の香りを嗅ぐために、
顔を近づけてみたその時です。香
りよりも先にその枝ぶりが私の目
に飛び込んできました。なんと、
枝の先の方が、三つに分かれてい
るのです。
「あれ！？ミツマタに似てる！」
それが私の率直な印象でした。
帰宅してミツマタを調べてみると
なんと、ミツマタはジンチョウゲ
科の植物でした。
なるほど！
属は違うけど、同じ科なのですね
〜。（沈丁花はジンチョウゲ科ジ
ンチョウゲ属、ミツマタはジンチ
ョウゲ科ミツマタ属）
自分の着眼点に満足しながら（笑）
ミツマタにフォーカスして更に調
べていきます。
まずは、その名前から。ミツマタ
の名前の由来については、かの牧
野富太郎博士が「三又はその枝が
三本ずつに分かれていることによ
る」と述べている通り、全ての枝
が三つに別れています。
成長すると高さは１〜２mほどに
なります。
ミツマタは、和紙の原料として有
名ですが、日本紙幣の原料として
も使われています。茎の繊維質が
発達していて、折れなどに強い、
良質の紙を作り出せるのです。
英語名が “Paperbush” というので
すから、地球上の様々な土地で、
紙の原料として重宝されてきた植
物に違いありませんね。
日本原産ではないのですが、いつ
渡来したのかははっきりとわかっ
ていません。和紙の原料として使
われたという記録があるのは江戸
時代ですが、サキクサ（三枝）と
いう名前で、古くは万葉集にもミ
ツマタを指した植物が歌に詠まれ
ています。
「春されば 先ず三枝（さきくさ）
の幸（さき）くあれば
後にも逢はむ な恋ひそ吾妹（わぎも）」
柿本人麻呂
（意味）春になるとまず咲くさき
くさ。その言葉のように幸せで無
事であったら必ずまた会えるでし
ょう。そんなに恋しく思わないで
ください、愛しい人よ。
素敵な恋の歌ですね。花が開くと
黄色の可愛らしい姿と共に、良い
香りがします。そんなに高くなら
ない木なので、この時期咲いてい
るミツマタを見かけたら、ぜひ香
りを嗅いでみてください。不思議
となんだか懐かしい香りに感じる
んです。過去生の記憶と繋がって
いるからなのでしょうか。
さて、ミツマタの花言葉をお届け
します。それは、「強靭」です。
タフな紙の原料となって文化を支
えてきたところからついた花言葉。
人工紙と比べ物にならないくらい
長持ちする和紙（1000年持つと
言われています）の原料ですから
ね。

ミモザのワークショップ、残すところ別会場の一日のみ。ミモザは本当に気持ちを上げてくれる明るい色をしています。そして香りも抜群！だけど、満開の切り枝をどこまでベストの状態で仕入れて提供できるか、にかかっているので、ワークショップの当日まで本当に気を揉みます（笑）。今年も無事に皆さんの満足そうな笑顔が見れてよかった！
In the vicinity of our school, Daphne flowers are blooming. When I approached them, I couldn’t help but think, “Hmm, this looks like the plant we used in the workshop!” So, I decided to investigate. What is the plant used in making washi paper?
【Ichirin 🌸 Announcing Spring with Mitsumata】
To catch the scent of Daphne flowers, I leaned in, and at that moment, it wasn’t the fragrance but the branching pattern that caught my eye. Surprisingly, the branches at the tips were divided into three.
“Wait! Does this look like Mitsumata?”
That was my immediate impression. Upon returning home and researching Mitsumata, I discovered that Mitsumata belongs to the Daphne family.
I see! Although they belong to different genera, they share the same family—Daphne family. (Daphne flowers belong to the Daphne genus in the Daphne family, while Mitsumata belongs to the Mitsumata genus in the Daphne family.)
Satisfied with my observation (laughs), I decided to focus more on Mitsumata and continued my research. First, I looked into its name. Regarding the origin of the name Mitsumata, as Dr. Tomitaro Makino mentioned, “Mitsumata has branches that divide into three,” and indeed, all its branches are divided into three.
When fully grown, Mitsumata reaches a height of 1 to 2 meters.
Mitsumata is well-known as a raw material for washi paper and is also used in Japanese banknotes. Its stem fibers are well-developed, making it resistant to breaking and capable of producing high-quality paper.
Its English name is “Paperbush,” indicating its global usefulness as a raw material for paper in various regions.
Although not native to Japan, it is not clear when Mitsumata was introduced. Records of its use as a raw material for washi paper date back to the Edo period, referred to as Sakikusa (three branches), and Mitsumata is mentioned in ancient poetry, such as in the Man’yoshu.
“Spring comes, and first, the joy of three branches. If happiness is like that word, we will surely meet again. Please don’t yearn too much, my dear.”
A beautiful love song. When the flowers bloom, along with their cute yellow appearance, they emit a pleasant fragrance. Since it’s not a tall tree, if you come across blooming Mitsumata this season, please take a moment to smell the fragrance. It somehow feels mysteriously nostalgic, perhaps connected to memories from past lives.
Now, let me share the flower language of Mitsumata, which is “tenacious.” This flower language is derived from its role in supporting culture as a tough paper material. Mitsumata paper lasts much longer than artificial paper (it is said to last 1000 years).
