【いちりん挿し🌸牧野富太郎が愛したバイカオウレン】

四国に住む友人が、牧野植物園に咲き乱れる美しいバイカオウレンの写真を送ってきてくれました。

昨年多くの視聴者を魅了したNH
Kの朝ドラ「らんまん」。その主
人公は、植物学者の牧野富太郎が
モデルになっています。「らんま
ん」で描かれていたとおり、牧野
富太郎は根っからの「植物オタク」
でした。好きなものに対して純粋
に真っ直ぐ向き合う姿勢、に加え
て、どの植物も分け隔てなくこよ
なく愛する彼の在り方は、まさに
私のストライクゾーン！

牧野富太郎は、１８６２年、高知
県生まれ。小学校を中退後、独学
で植物学者になりました。一生か
けて日本全国の植物を採取、研究
し、発見、命名した植物は、
２５００種以上もある、とされて
います。

昨年、両親と花散策をしに谷中墓
地をぶらぶらした際に、偶然にも
牧野富太郎のお墓と出会い、手を
合わせることができたのですが
（恐れ多いですが、これは牧野先
生に呼ばれたかと思いましたよ！）
今年は、近場の小石川植物園や、
東京練馬区にある牧野植物園にも
足を運ぶつもりです。
東京大学に助手として働いていた
牧野富太郎が上京して住んでいた
長屋が在った場所は、私の生まれ
育った界隈でもあり、なんだか勝
手にご縁を感じています（笑）。

さて、今日の主役は、牧野富太郎
が特に好きだったバイカオウレン
の花です。

友人がこの美しく咲き誇るバイカ
オウレンの写真を送ってきてくれ
たのは、つい数日前のこと。早春
と言っても、まだ寒い２月頃から
咲き始め、４月くらいまで美しい
姿を私たちに見せてくれます。
早いところだと、もうこの時期に
咲いているのですね。

バイカオウレンは、キンポウゲ科
オウレン属の常緑多年草。東北南
部から四国にかけて分布し、山林
や雑木林に自生しています。心地
よい静かな木漏れ日が注ぐ山の中
の、ちょっと湿ったふかふかな土
に真っ白な花が群生している様子
を想像してみてください。なんと
も言えない幸せな気持ちになりま
せんか。

名前の由来は、バイカは「梅花」
梅の花に似ているところから、そ
して「オウレン」は「黄蓮」、黄
色い色をした根が横に伸びて連な
って増えていくさまから名付けら
れたとされています。梅の花のよ
うに見える白い部分は、実は花弁
ではなくガク片です。花弁は、写
真に見える小さい黄色い部分にな
ります。

ガクの部分が花びらのように見え
る植物は、他にも結構あるのです
が、わかりやすいのはガクアジサ
イやクリスマスローズなど。花び
らのような部分を触ってみると少
し硬めなので、そこがガクだとい
う感じが伝わりやすいと思います。
ですが、バイカオウレンはどうな
んでしょう？ガクも柔らかそうな
ので、一度お目にかかって触らせ
てもらいたいです。

さて、バイカオウレンですが、
「２度目の恋」「情熱」など、爽
やかな見た目と違う、熱い花言葉
を持っています。

牧野富太郎が愛したバイカオウレ
ンの花。彼の植物への情熱を投影
しているようにも見えませんか。
９４歳で亡くなる前に彼が遺した
素敵な言葉を尾形さんにも
お贈りします。

『私は今年９４才になった。
私は幾つになっても眼がみえる限り
植物と共に生活を続けるつもりでいる。
私は、ふりかえって、私の生涯をみた。
それは常に私の周囲をとり囲んでいた植物が、
私を幸福という二字からはなさなかった。
そこで、私は、この幸福を、日本中の学生諸君をはじめ、
植物を愛する人々にわかちたいと思う。
専門家にならなくてもよい。
植物に接することは、健康的であり、美しく、楽しいものである。
そして、１人でも多くの人が植物を好きになってもらいたい、
私はそれを希望する。　
昭和３１年１１月２日』

【編集後記】
最近、この歳になって初めて本格的な四川料理をいただきました。これまでは円卓を囲んでわいわい食べたり、カジュアルなお店で熱々の麻婆豆腐を食べる、人気の担々麺に舌鼓を打つ、というような経験はあったのですが、本格的なコース料理は初めてでした。私の中での四川料理、ひいては中華料理の概念がガラッと変わるものでした。食文化も奥が深いですね。すっかり四川料理のファンになりました！おすすめのお店がありましたら、ぜひ教えてくださ〜い！

[Ichirin Note 🌸 Baikaouren Loved by Makino Tomitaro]

Last year, NHK’s morning drama “Ranman,” which captivated many viewers, featured the protagonist modeled after botanist Makino Tomitaro. As depicted in “Ranman,” Makino Tomitaro was a true “plant geek.” His pure and straightforward attitude towards what he loved, along with his equal love for all plants, resonates with me.
Born in 1862 in Kochi Prefecture, Makino Tomitaro became a self-taught botanist after dropping out of elementary school. Throughout his life, he collected, studied, discovered, and named over 2500 plants across Japan.

Last year, while strolling through Yanaka Cemetery with my parents for a flower walk, we unexpectedly came across Makino Tomitaro’s grave and were able to pay our respects. (It felt like he called us!) This year, I plan to visit nearby Koishikawa Botanical Garden and Makino Botanical Garden in Nerima, Tokyo. The neighborhood where Makino Tomitaro, who worked as an assistant at the University of Tokyo, lived and worked, is also where I grew up, creating a sense of connection.
Now, let’s focus on the star of today, the Baikaouren flower that Makino Tomitaro particularly loved.

A few days ago, my friend sent me pictures of these beautifully blooming Baikaouren. Despite it still being early spring, they start blooming around February when it’s chilly and continue to showcase their beauty until around April. In some places, they might already be blooming at this time.

Baikaouren is an evergreen perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family. It is distributed from southern Tohoku to Shikoku, growing in mountain forests and deciduous forests. Imagine the scene of these pure white flowers flourishing in a slightly damp and soft soil under the gentle sunlight filtering through the trees on the mountains. It creates an indescribable sense of happiness.

The name “Baikaouren” comes from “Baika,” which means “plum blossom” due to its resemblance to plum flowers. “Ouren” means “yellow extention,” named after the yellowish roots that extend and spread. The white part that looks like plum blossoms is actually not petals but sepals. The petals are the small yellow parts visible in the photo.

While there are other plants where the sepal part looks like petals, such as Lacecap Hydrangea or Christmas Rose, Baikaouren seems different. As the sepals also appear soft, I would love to see and touch them in person.
Baikaouren, despite its refreshing appearance, carries meanings like “second love” and “passion.”
Doesn’t the flower of Baikaouren, loved by Makino Tomitaro, seem to project his passion for plants? Before he passed away at the age of 94, he left these wonderful words for you,尾形-san.

“I turned 94 this year. As long as my eyes can see, I intend to continue living with plants. Looking back on my life, the plants that always surrounded me never let me go from the happiness they provided. Therefore, I want to share this happiness with students all over Japan and those who love plants, even if they don’t become experts. Interacting with plants is healthy, beautiful, and enjoyable. I hope that as many people as possible will come to love plants. November 2, 1956.”

[Editor’s Note] Recently, for the first time at this age, I had authentic Sichuan cuisine. While I’ve had experiences like gathering around a round table and enjoying casual hot Mapo Tofu at popular restaurants, having a full-course meal was a new experience.
