仕事帰りのいつもの道。夕食に何
を作ろうか・・・と考えながら、
夜道を歩いていると、ふわぁっと
広がるような甘い良い香りがして
きました。
間違いなくお花の香り！だけど、
風に乗ってこんなにも圧倒的に薫
るのか？というほどの、しっかり
とした香り。そう、香水をつけす
ぎてしまった人が遠くから近づい
てきた時に、その姿が見えずとも
香りが先に薫ってくる、そんな状
況に近い感じ（笑）。それくらい
インパクトのある香り方でした。
緩やかなカーブを下った道の左側
に見えてきたのが、白梅の大木。
「梅かあ！」と、香りの正体がわ
かったと同時に、満開のまるまる
とした花を枝中につけた立派な梅
の木にしばし見とれてしまいまし
た。
その姿は、夜に見ると、まるで雪
が枝に積もったかのようでした。
こんなに立派な梅の木が、個人宅
のお庭にあるなんて。うらやまし
いわ〜。
今週のメルマガは梅に決定！と思
ったら、今度は口の中が酸っぱく
なって唾をごっくん。はい、梅の
実を想像して梅干しやら梅酒やら
が頭に浮かんできて・・・（笑）。
それもまた梅の良いところ。花だ
けでなく、果実も人の生活に密着
している植物です。
今まであまり注意して梅の木の種
類を見てきたことがなかったので
今回少し詳しく調べてみました。
梅は、観賞用の「花ウメ」と、食
品用の実をつける「実ウメ」の二
種に分類されます。観賞用の花ウ
メもたくさんの種類があり、枝や
性質などをベースにさらに数種類
に分類されています。中国原産で
すが日本での歴史も長く、万葉集
には１００を超える数の梅の歌が
詠まれています。奈良時代にはす
っかり栽培が定着していたことが
分かりますね。ちなみに、歌が詠
まれていたことから栽培の状態が
わかる、って、とても素敵だと思
いませんか？私はそんな日本の文
化を誇りに思います。
香りに圧倒されたあの夜道の白梅
の種類が一体なんなのか。名前を
知りたくて、撮った写真を拡大し
て梅の図鑑と見比べたりもしまし
たが、ついぞどの種類か分からず
じまいでした。まあ、３００種類
以上あるそうなので、特定できな
くても仕方ありませんね（笑）。
梅は香りよし、味もよし、健康に
もよし、と三拍子揃っています。
平安時代には梅干しの効用を重ん
じ薬として扱い、鎌倉時代には茶
菓子として、または縁起物として
好まれ、江戸時代にはおせちにも
入っていたそうです。日本人の食
生活にも寄り添ってきた梅。
美しく香り高い梅の木を眺めなが
ら、その歴史にも思いを馳せつつ
梅酒を飲むのも乙だな、と思うの
は私だけではないはず。
さて、梅の花言葉。今日は白梅で
お届けしましょう。
それは、「気品」です。
美味しい梅酒を飲みすぎて、くれ
ぐれも気品を失わないように・・
・・笑。

雛人形を飾りました。私の雛人形は、祖母が選んでくれた立ち雛です。オレンジワインを飲みながらふとお顔を見やると、なんだか微笑んでいるように見えました。（決して酔っ払いではありません笑）私には男の子しかいないから、この雛人形は私と一生を共にするんだな、、、なんて思いながら。

【Ichirin’s Insert 🌸 Plum Blossoms – a polular theme in Manyoshu 】
Undoubtedly the fragrance of flowers! However, the scent was so overwhelming, carried by the wind, that it made a strong and distinct impression. It was like the situation when someone wearing too much perfume approaches from a distance, and you can smell the fragrance before seeing them – a similar feeling (laughs). The scent was that impactful.
On the left side of the road as I descended a gentle curve, I saw a large white plum tree in full bloom. “Ah, it’s plum blossoms!” I realized the source of the fragrance and was captivated by the splendid plum tree with fully bloomed flowers on its branches.
In the night, its appearance resembled as if snow had accumulated on the branches. Such a magnificent plum tree in the backyard of a private residence. How enviable!
As I decided that this week’s newsletter would be about plums, my mouth suddenly puckered, and I swallowed saliva. Yes, thinking about plums led me to imagine plum pickles, plum wine, and so on.lol That’s also a wonderful aspect of plums – they are plants that are closely connected to people’s lives, not only through flowers but also through fruits.
I hadn’t paid much attention to the types of plum trees before, so this time, I took a closer look. Plums are classified into two types: “Hana Ume” for ornamental use, and “Mi Ume” that bears fruits for consumption. There are many varieties of ornamental plum blossoms, further classified based on branches and characteristics. Although originally from China, plums have a long history in Japan, with over 100 plum poems in the Manyoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves). It’s fascinating to think that through these poems, the cultivation conditions of plums in ancient Japan can be understood. I take pride in such aspects of Japanese culture.
The type of white plum tree that overwhelmed me with its fragrance on that night road – I was curious about its identity. Despite enlarging the photo and comparing it with plum guides, I couldn’t determine its specific type. Well, there are reportedly over 300 varieties, so it’s understandable that I couldn’t identify it.lol
Plums are known for their good fragrance, taste, and health benefits. During the Heian period, the medicinal properties of plum pickles were emphasized, and in the Kamakura period, they were favored as tea sweets, symbols of good fortune, and even found their way into New Year’s dishes during the Edo period. Plums have been closely intertwined with the Japanese diet.
While gazing at the beautifully fragrant plum tree and contemplating its history, I’m not the only one who thinks it’s delightful to sip plum wine.
Now, the language of plum blossoms. Today, let’s share the meaning for white plum blossoms: “Refinement.” So, while enjoying delicious plum wine, let’s make sure not to lose our refinement… .lol

I decorated my Hina dolls. The Hina dolls at my place are standing dolls chosen by my grandmother. While casually looking at their faces with a glass of orange wine in hand, they seemed to be smiling somehow (definitely I’m not drunk, haha). Since I only have boys, these Hina dolls will be with me for a lifetime, I thought.
