「ひなまつり」の童謡の歌詞に登
場するお花といえば「桃の花」。
実際に、桃の花と菜の花を一緒に
飾ってひな祭りを彩ることが定番
になっています。
ですが、雛人形と共に飾られてい
るひな壇の植物の飾り物は、桃の
花ではありません。２種類の植物
が飾られていますが、向かって左
側が橘、右側が桜です。
ひな壇は、京都御所内部にある
「紫宸殿（ししんでん）」をモデ
ルに作られたものです。「左近の
桜、右近の橘」という呼び方は、
宮中の警護を担当する近衛兵であ
る左近衛と右近衛が、この２種類
の木の近くに配置されていたこと
が始まりだそうです。あれ？お気
づきになりましたか？皆さんから
見たひな壇の植物は、左側に橘、
右側に桜、ですよね。そうなんで
す、「左近の桜、右近の橘」は、
親王、つまりお雛様から見た視点
なのです。
橘は不老不死の木とされ、古代か
ら魔除け、厄除け、不老長寿の意
味を持つとして好まれてきました。
古事記、日本書紀にも、垂仁天皇
が常世の国に使者を遣わせて、
「非時香菓（ときじくのかぐのこ
のみ）・非時香木実（時じくの香
の木の実）」と呼ばれる永遠の命
をもたらす霊薬を持ち帰らせた、
という話が記されています。この
実が橘の実です。
橘は、日本に古くから自生してい
る日本固有の柑橘です。学名は
Citrus tachibanaといい、沖縄の
シークヮーサーと橘の２種類だけ
が日本原産の柑橘種です。九州、
四国など暖かい海岸沿いに自生、
北限は静岡県沼津市で確認されて
います。私が面白いな、と思うの
は、花と実を同時に見ることがで
きる点です。白い花が咲いている
時に鮮やかなオレンジ色の果実も
なっていて、緑色の濃い葉の中に
美しいコントラストを見せてくれ
ます。
「重ね色目」という、十二単のよ
うに着物の色を重ねて楽しむコー
ディネートのパターンに、「花橘」
という組み合わせがあるそうで、
まさにその色は、緑、白、オレン
ジ。自然の色目を着物に取り込み
季節を楽しむセンス、日本文化ら
しい素敵な一面ですよね。
さて、橘の花言葉は、「追憶」。
芳しい花の香りに昔の恋に思いを
馳せる、そんなところからついた
花言葉のようです。
橘の花が咲く5月ごろになったら、
重ね色目のような爽やかな緑、白
オレンジで令和版コーディネート
を楽しんでみたいと思います🎵

【Ichirin Insert 🌸 Hinamatsuri’s Ritual – The power of Tachibana】
When we think of flowers mentioned in the lyrics of the Hinamatsuri song, “Momo no Hana” or Peach Blossoms come to mind. In reality, it has become a tradition to decorate Hinamatsuri with both peach blossoms and rapeseed blossoms.
However, the decorative plants on the Hinadan, along with Hina dolls, are not peach blossoms. Two types of plants are used, and from left to right, it’s tachibana (mandarin orange) on the left and sakura (cherry blossom) on the right.
The Hinadan is modeled after the “Shishinden” within the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The names “Sakura on the left, Tachibana on the right” originated from the positioning of the palace guards, the Sakonoe and Ukonoe, near these two types of trees. Did you notice? From your perspective, the decorative plants on the Hinadan are Tachibana on the left and Sakura on the right. “Sakura on the left, Tachibana on the right” is the viewpoint from the Hina dolls, or the princes.
Tachibana is considered a tree of eternal youth and longevity, and has been favored for its protective, warding-off, and anti-aging qualities since ancient times. In the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, there is a story of Emperor Suinin sending messengers to the eternal land, bringing back a medicine called “Tokijiku no Kagunokonomi” or “Tokijiku no Kō no Mi,” which is said to bestow eternal life. This fruit is the tachibana fruit.
Tachibana is a citrus native to Japan and has been growing naturally for a long time. Its scientific name is Citrus tachibana, and only this and the Okinawan Shikuwasa are native citrus species in Japan. It grows along the warm coastlines, with its northern limit confirmed in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. What I find interesting is that you can see both flowers and fruits at the same time. When the white flowers bloom, vibrant orange fruits also appear, creating a beautiful contrast within the dense green leaves.
There is a combination called “Hanadachibana” in the pattern of coordinating kimono colors, where colors are layered like a Juni-hitoe. The colors are green, white, and orange. Incorporating natural colors into kimono and enjoying the seasons is a wonderful aspect of Japanese culture.
Now, the flower language of tachibana is “Recollection.” It seems to come from reminiscing about past loves while enjoying the fragrance of the beautiful flowers.
When tachibana flowers bloom around May, I’d like to enjoy a Reiwa-era coordination with refreshing green, white, and orange, just like the layered colors.
